Today Brooke and I went into see Dr. Hardy and his nurse for a 6 week follow up appointment. First we did the EKG and Brooke did great. They hooked up about 8 wires to her chest and it came back normal and perfect like we hoped for. Then Dr. Hardy did a normal check-up and he was very pleased to see how happy and energetic she was.
After our visit with Dr. Hardy we then walked down the hall to the heart sonogram technician and Brooke picked out the Little Mermaid to watch (All the nurses were expecting the Lion King – they actually had this one ready for her). For all sonograms the Child has to sit very very still so they have a TV in the room to help. Dr Hardy calls the TV a “comma creator” because the kids always do so well (Especially Brooke she didn't even flinch). The sonogram took about 45 minutes and then Dr. Hardy came in and we went over the pictures and results.
Dr. Hardy said all the inflammation was gone and it wouldn’t even appear that she had Kawasaki
Disease! This was GREAT news as her coronary arteries looked normal and there were no aneurisms!! Brooke is now off her daily aspirin and we go back in 6 months for another follow-up on July 30th.
We are so happy and thankful that we caught this disease early and she was treated immediately. Plus the IVIG must have worked. As Dr. Hardy says “they still don’t even know why the IVIG solution works, it just does” as they are still trying to do more research on the disease and how it comes about. Dr. Hardy asked us to become a part of the research study for Kawasaki Disease and I agreed. Brooke will go back in a couple of years and have some blood taken for future research. I believe anything we can do to help other families is very important. Especially
since there are so many unknowns about this disease and how it even comes about or even how it should be treated. Plus, Brooke has a 3% chance of getting this disease again. And Avery has a 5% change of getting it over someone else.
Also, we are a part of the Kawasaki Disease Foundation and recently donated to the group. National Kawasaki Disease was Jan 26th and thank you to those who actually donated in honor of our little Brooke!! Thank you so much.
